As seen on on my appearance on BBC's Make It Art Market.
Chu'npo were one of the currencies used in Cameroon before the colonial era. They are iron ornaments made in the shape of hoe heads. Much in the same way that many groups across Africa used currencies shaped out of iron or steel, in the likeness of spear heads and other tools sometimes larger than a person. Chu'npo were often about 70cm tall, and were a prestigious form of bride wealth.
It is my belief that they were valuable not only because of the skill it took to make them, but that they often represented the actual tool in which you could easily convert the currency into. The combined result reminds us of the life and value built into old systems and helps us envision different ways of shaping our future.
